  • Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that New York City's Central Park monument to Christopher Columbus has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 76-foot rostral column was erected in 1892 in Central Park by New York's growing Italian-Americancommunity, which embraced Columbus as a unifying figure to help Italians overcome discrimination and gain inclusion in mainstream society.

    With flags, scarves, and tri-colored handkerchiefs, approximately 50 members of Italian-American organizations took part in Saturday’s rally at Columbus Circle. The following day in Queens marked the first meeting of Mayor de Blasio’s commission aimed at examining “symbols of hate.” The great navigator, Christopher Columbus, found himself at the center of the controversy surrounding the Commission and its mission.

    Following last month’s removal of some statues and monuments, protests ensued, sparking tension regarding race relations and whether or not statues depicting prominent figures in American history should be removed. Although the statutes in question are mostly located in formerly Confederate states, some are found in the north as well. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the statue of Christopher Columbus in Manhattan’s Columbus Circle would come under scrutiny.

I-italy attended the Columbus Day Parade on 5th Avenue together with the delegation of the Associazione Nazionale Famiglie Emigranti - National Association of Emigrant Families (ANFE) - led by its National President Learco Saporito and Mr. Gaetano Calà, Director of the Migration Policy Office of ANFE's Sicilian branch. Thousands of people of all nationalities, generations and cultures stopped by to celebrate the 517th anniversary of the discovery of America by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.
