LIFE,ENVIRONMENT AND THE UNIVERSE
“The Eerie Silence. Is There Life in the Universe or Are We Alone?” is the last lecture on hot science issues by Vittorio Canuto (former senior scientist at NASA, now Professor at Columbia University). He will converse with Massimo Pigliucci (Professor of Philosophy at Lehman College). In his third talk, Vittorio Canuto will discuss the possible existence of life on other planets. We are living in an extraordinary time of discoveries of planets none of which is as yet “earth like” but the expectations are justifiably high that it is just a question of time before we do. But even if we do, discovering “life” is another question. Is there life on such planets based on carbon as ours is? If there is life, “where are they?, as E. Fermi famously asked. Since we have tried for several decades to receive some signals of their presence but none was detected (the SETI program, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), what do we have to make of this “eerie silence”? Are we really alone in the Universe? What would be the implications if we are alone or if we discover we are not? What new perspectives at all levels would this entail? R.S.V.P.
