Lecture. Bronzino and Eleonora di Toledo: A Painter and His Patron
Over the past two decades, scholarly thought on the nature of the relationship between Bronzino and Eleonora di Toledo has been substantially revised. Initially thought of as solely the subject of one of the painter's best-known portraits and the recipient of what is perhaps his most outstanding surviving work, the Chapel of Eleonora in the Palazzo Vecchio, the Duchess of Florence has emerged in recent scholarship as one of Bronzino's most important and demanding patrons. Nonetheless, this relationship remains controversial and scholarly debate over it intense. In this talk, I will attempt to identify the most significant works documenting Eleonora's patronage of Bronzino and to characterize the nature of this particular patron-artist rapport.
