Italian Physicians Helping a World in Need
In 1994, Italian surgeon Luigi Strada founded the humanitarian organization, Emergency, to help civilian victims of war. Today the organization operates in 14 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Rwanda.
On Sunday, April 5 at 6 p.m., Emergency representative Dr. Chiara Megighian Zenati will talk about the organization and how it operates. Emergency has undertaken projects that include building hospitals, surgical Centers, rehabilitation centers, and pediatric clinics dedicated to war victims, in places where there are none. Emergency has also helped to renovate and equip pre-existing health facilities.
Emergency believes that healthcare should be a basic human right and offers medical and surgical treatment completely free of charge, guaranteeing treatment to anyone in need of assistance. Between 1994 and December 2008, Emergency teams
provided assistance to over 3 million people.
Dorothea’s House is located at 120 John St. The program is offered free of charge, although the community is encouraged to bring an offering of food or drink for the reception following the program.
Donations to the non-profit organization Emergency
are optional, but donors who give $25 or more will receive a membership card to Emergency.
