VOICES OF ITALY at New York City Center & at Columbus Day Parade

As part of the celebrations for the “year of Italian Culture” the ArtsLab OnStage presents Voices of Italy; an evening filled with Italian theatre featuring T’Ammore “The Spirit of Naples”, a dance and music performance and an operatic concert by Belcanto “The Luciano Pavarotti Heritage.”

T’Ammore presents the popular Italian dance Tarantella choreographed by Maestro Vittorio Biagi. The visual concept was created by Cirque du Soleil’s former Vice President, Claude Tissier and the costumes were designed by Giuseppe Tramontano. The production features Neapolitan music by Gino Magurno, Renato Salvetti and Annalisa Madonna.

To complement the traditional dance scene, the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation has handpicked 16 young and talented opera singers, accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra and 9 dancers. The performance is a “Bel canto” bouquet of popular arias, classic Neapolitan songs and contemporary compositions. Belcanto’s rhythm section was conducted by Pasquale Menchise, choreographed by Vittorio Biagi. Projection and light design by Claude Tissier and costumes by Giuseppe Tramontano.

This event will demonstrate the influence of Italy's contemporary artistic talents, and serve as an introduction to more Italian cultural performances produced by ArtsLab OnStage in New York. Performers from T'Ammore and Belcanto will also be featured in this year's Columbus Day Parade with Live TV performances from the "Red Carpet".

T'Ammore pays homage to the classic Neapolitan song and the most popular dance and myth from the south of Italy, the Tarantella. The story is told through music and dance by 22 performing artists and explores this myth, which starts when a tarantula spider bites the feet of young ladies who are then compelled to dance the tarantella for hours to free themselves of the spider's venom. A story of fantasy, love, and redemption, T'Ammore shows that the power of music and dance can ultimately help us reconnect to our roots.

Originally produced and staged at the Menotti Theater in Spoleto, Italy, T'Ammore has also perfomed at the Arena Flegrea of Naples, at the D'Annunzio Theater in Latina and the Sistina Theater in Rome. The full production will be staged in New York in spring 2014.

The Belcanto concerts present unique and original performances of popular opera arias, classic Neapolitan songs and international contemporary compositions arranged according to the aesthetics and stylistic canons of the Italian "Bel canto."

Belcanto tells the story of the vocal style created in Italy, then travelled around the world finally arriving in America influencing musical theatre and many of today's contemporary artists. The show presents 16 singers, 9 dancers, a 25-piece orchestra and rhythm section conducted by Pasquale Menchise, all performing in a theatrical environment with choreography by Vittorio Biagi, projection and light design by Claude Tissier and costumes by Giuseppe Tramontano.

    Mariana’s Small Italian Kingdom

Our continuous search for all things Italian in New York City has brought us to a haven that is even difficult to find in Italy. It’s a special boutique, almost an art gallery, where we found carefully chosen fashion accessories and small treasures from all over Italy.

Here you will not find the usual, known brands, but this does not mean that the items sold here are not sophisticated or precious. The shop carries hats, shoes, jewelry, scarves, belts, and bags that are not mass-produced, but the result of painstaking craftsmanship designed for a select few.

Mariana Antinori is responsible for creating this little paradise for women who love fashion and who want to stand out from the crowd.

Born in Argentina to Italian parents, a Tuscan father and a Franco-Piedmontese mother, Mariana went to Florence after finishing college and worked for Ferragamo for two years. Back in Argentina, she and her sister dress label, and later Mariana successfully launched a line of children’s clothes. Her life changed when she met her American husband.

She moved to New York City in 1996 and here she has been able to focus on her true passion: product design.

Mariana comes out to meet us and moves about her little kingdom like a princess. She shows us some pieces from her collection; they’re very simple but at the same time extraordinarily beautiful.

She opened this shop only a few months ago and it has already become a mecca for women who love Italian fashion. The boutique focuses on small Italian companies, which provide the world with meticulously crafted, creative, and innovative products.

“I was tired of doing shows and carrying around these pieces. I said to myself: I’m ready to open a boutique; these things are not easily found. I want it to be original and I want all Italian things.” Thanks to friendships formed over the years and during her travels throughout Italy, Antinori is able to gather objects that are hard to find. “Finding well-made Italian luxury objects that are also clean and classic is not easy in New York City. I have exclusive accessories. I love design and I have a taste for detail. It’s like being a curator. Italian designers are true artists.” She is also very proud of the objects in the collection that she herself designed. “I made these myself. A crazy success. They are beautiful. I chose my logo. It’s small and there is no name on it.”

We asked her how she chooses the products she sells. “I follow my taste. I like fashion design that is simple and timeless.”

Year of Italian Culture Celebrations Reach Chicago

Ten days dedicated to Italian culture and friendship between Italy and the United States for the city of Chicago. As of this evening, the "capital" of the Midwest is celebrating its 2013 Year of Italian Culture in the U.S. with three concerts of Maestro Riccardo Muti, director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts are celebrating the life of the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. "Verdi is a composer loved all over the world, but - in spite of its popularity - he is not yet adequately known," - noted Muti. "It's a happy coincidence - he continued - that we can commemorate the bicentenary of his birth exactly in 2013, when we celebrate the Year of Italian Culture in the United States."

In addition to the concerts of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, one of the highlights of the event, there are other initiatives planned in the up coming days in Chicago. On June 24, at the Field Museum, artist Marco Nereo Rotelli will present an installation of contemporary lights and sounds inspired by the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, while from the 25th to the 29th of June the "Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier" will host Toni Servillo and Piccolo Teatro di Milano with "The Voices Within" by Eduardo De Filippo.

Finally, on July 11, the exhibition Barrique promoted by the Community of San Patrignano will arrive in Chicago. It is an exhibition of design objects made of wood from old barrels. The exhibit has been very successful in Washington, New York and Boston.

"Chicago is home to some of the main events of the Year of Culture," said the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Claudio Bisogniero. "Being able to count on an exceptional testimonial and world-renowned personalities such as Maestro Muti, or quality and artistic tradition of Piccolo Teatro of Milan, makes our event particularly unique," he added.

Veneto in NY. Rides, Villas and Presentations

The Veneto has been in the spotlight all over New York for the last two days thanks to the project Venetian Villas and the reconstruction of Amusement Park in Coney Island.

The Veneto region is among the more known and most sought-after destinations in the world.

It is the unprecedented first step of most tourists, as is was announced to New York tour operators at ENIT, at the Italian Restaurant Remi during a press conference, and the following day, to city authorities, and crowd and children gathered at the famous Amusement Park in Coney Island.

The plentiful offerings of this rich region were presented at the offices of ENIT, located in Rockefeller Center. Among the riches of the region, the focus of the presentation has been on the prestigious Venetian villas (more than 104 recently opened to the public, 23 of which are attributed to the great architect Andrea Palladio), which are no longer only artistic temples, but now offer an opportunity to anyone to live in them, inhabit them for a day or an entire holiday, to rent them for an event such as a wedding.

The special presenter, together with the Director of ENIT Eugenio Magnani, and the Head of Tourism of the Veneto Region, Marino Finozzi, was the Countess Maria Carolina Valmarana, the lucky owner of a historic villa (Villa Valmarana ai Nani), with the help of some stunning images and her words, created a dreamy atmosphere of welcoming guests in these magical places, full of art of art and history. It was a short daydream trip, but a dream that can be made a reality thanks to the exceptional new network of Venetian villas.

The Republic of Venice, in a thousand years of its history, has left multiple inheritances. In the mainland the most striking is represented by the so-called civilization of Venetian villas, which is to be understood as a type of government of the territory, micro-families and communities, heritage of the arts, works of many architects, painters, sculptors.

Maria Carolina Vamarana has demonstrated what it means to recreate a villa, and in her case her whole life, in order to make it into a cultural and tourist attraction. Evident in her speech were love and passion but also a particular firmness in expressing the need to never betray the history of the home, which should never be transformed into a simple money making instrument and destroying the territory.

As part of the Regional Programme of Innovative Actions (PRAI), Villevenete.net has been created to promote and enhance the riches of Venetian Villas. "Viven Open Net. The project is part of e-EuropaRegio: the company at service of regional development." We invite you to visit the site, which will be completed in the next month.

The Veneto region thanks to its cultural heritage, its beautiful landscapes and the variety of environments and ecosystems, is able to meet - as the commissioner and the Director of ENIT mentioned- a wide range of needs and present visitors with numerous offerings: from art voyages to resorts, from spas to the sport oriented tours, from mountains to the countryside. Not to mention its extraordinary culinary tradition and excellent wine. Do not forget that in the US the consumption and sales of Italian sparkling wine Prosecco, has exceeded that of the seemingly more popular French champagne.

The following day in Coney Island, where the Amusment Park was reopening for the 2013 season, despite it being a gray and rainy day, the wind seemed to be arriving directly from Veneto. Memorial Day always marks the start of the bathing season and Mayor Michael Bloomberg also inaugurated the reopening of the Amusement Park. The event was filled with Venetian masks and Italian Prosecco. Between the figurines of the famous carousel a masked dance, the most beautiful and dreamy was performed.

Why the Venetian presence in the famous Coney Island Amusement Park?

The rebirth of the park was overseen by Zamparela, a company from Vicenza, an undisputed world leader in amusement rides. Steeplechase Plaza with its carousel horses restored accompanied a multimedia presentation of University Ca' Foscari on the origins and history of Venice, an event organized on the occasion of the 2013 Year of Italian Culture in the United States.

Alberto - CEO  Zamperla SpA – after Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s inauguration has skillfully and passionately presented the multimedial Venice of Ca 'Foscari to all gathered including the New York  Consul General Natalia Quintavalle, the Director of ENIT Eugenio Magnani, director of ITC, Celeste, President of the Borough of Brooklyn, Marty Markowitz.

“There is an Italy, in this particular case Veneto” - said Marty Markowitz, “ that

saved Coney Island. " Natalia Quintavalle, the Italian Consul has emphasized the importance of Zamperla’s work, inserting it into the context of the Year of Italian Culture in the United States "for both industrial and social impact in this country."

Zamperla came to America at the age of 24. "My father has always been a lover of American organization. His dream was to open a branch here and so he sent me." And his company today builds amusement parks in the United States, as well as in Korea, Northern Ireland, England, Dubai, and the Philippines. You see the passion and love for his work in his eyes when he talks about it.” The company's CEO, creates with his words and his presentation a great sense of humility, perhaps due to a sense of Venetian enterprise and the simplicity with which he tells us: "I am just plain carny, it’s a part of the history of our family for four generations."

His company is currenntly carrying out a project in Baghdad, a construction of a new amusement park in the suburbs- and he notes: "A park brings fun, brings joy, especially in difficult situations." In his future: a continuation of a collaboration with Ca 'Foscari of which the Coney Island presentation was just a small preview. The father has started it all, he founded the company building rides for the family, his first intuition being designing bumper cars built especially for kids, and not just for adults. The son still calls himself "a carny," a carny of promulgation of the culture and history of Veneto thanks to the project with Ca’ Foscari.

The Veneto crosses New York, brings us images, people, leaves fun rides, sends

its culture through its food, its wines, and its music. It also sends its invitation to visit it. As soon as possible.

For the past 25 years the American-Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF) has been serving economically disadvantaged women in New York City by providing no-cost breast cancer screening, outreach and education program through a mobile unit that reaches them in their own neighborhoods.

Many of these women have geographic, cultural or linguistic barriers that interfere with them receiving appropriate screening services and often stop them from making the annual breast screening for cancer a priority. The mobile unit visits neighborhoods in the five boroughs to provide mammograms, clinical breast exams as well as education and instruction in breast self-exam. All of the services are at no cost, regardless of health insurance status.

The Foundation also supports cancer research and education through funding of International Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships placing emphasis on the collaboration between Italy and the United States.

Celebrate in Pink is for breast cancer survivors, scientists and physicians, and for all men and women in New York City who wish to “give back” to those less fortunate and recognize the importance of this life-saving program.

Please join AICF for the event, as your support will help in the continuation and improvement of the wonderful service AICF has been providing for a quarter of the century.
