Helen Del Guidice's paintings of Romany women and children - her "Rom Madonnas" series - are stirring portraits which force us to contemplate these women and children in their ongoing poverty and marginalization. Del Guidice has captured the tenacious individualism of her subjects, with both despair and love etched in their faces. They are no longer "beggars," but cherished individuals--cherished by the artist, if not by the world that segregates them.

The collection of works depicts the mercureal nature of solitude: solitude can be heavy or light, joyful or anxious, liberating or alienating. We can choose solitude or endure it. We can experience and face it alone, or with others. Solitude is an essential part of our lives. Yet nobody teaches us how to experience it. In their works, Agostini, Ahn and Ferreira emphasize the fact that solitude is inseparable from our history and humanity. Each of their works approaches solitude from a different angle.

This course examines key texts in the first Cantica of the Divine Comedy, which presents the heaven-bound human soul of its author as it faces the horror and temptation of sin. The approach is more concerned with art than with theology the focus is on a detailed examination of the text. The Princeton University Dante Project will be available as a resource. Robert Hollander, an emeritus professor of European literature at Princeton University, has written many books and articles about Dante and directs both the Dartmouth University and the Princeton Dante projects
