On Thursday, October 2, the Italian Culture Institute in New York introduces “The Macchiaioli,” an exhibit curated by Marco Bertoli. Twenty masterpieces coming from the private Italian collection to New York for the first time include: Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini and other big influential avant-garde artists that are most important to the Italian paintings of the 1800s.
  • For a quarter century the bucolic Tuscan town of La Foce has been the focal point for one of Italy’s many delightful summer festivals of the arts. This week’s festival included a performance attuned to better times—the Polyphony Youth Ensemble under the direction of Saleem Ashkar. Even as the Israelis and Palestinians are at war, the young musicians performing Beethoven and Dvorak are both Israelis and Palestinians, and the goal is to help pave a way toward peace. Elsewhere Italians struggle to understand the vicious war on the not very distant opposite side of the Mediterranean, while some fear a revival of anti-Semitism.
  • Eugenio Magnani, director of the Italian Government Tourist Board, in the company of Hon. Natalia Quintavalle, Consul General of Italy in New York, Alberto Perruzzini, director of the Regional Agency of Tourism Toscana and James Bradburne, director of the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, presented Destination Tuscany 2014, a special event organized by Regione Toscana to re-introduce the beloved tourist destination and its new opportunities and novelties
  • Italian newspaper, La Nazione, initiated the idea of celebrating with a Global Toast to help promote 2013 summer events in Tuscany, the region's beauty and culture. New York celebrated with the Tuscan Association's president Joan Migliori, Niccolò Del Buffa and Consul General Natalia Quintavalle at Per Lei.
  • Despite his busy schedule, Italian tenor and star Andrea Bocelli took the time to surprise a small group of press representatives gathered at The Ritz Carlton to talk about his native region. It was part of a presentation, held under the auspices of the Consulate General, with the collaboration of ENIT, Regione Toscana and Toscana Promozione, of the book Voices of Tuscany by Giorgio De Martino.
