October 2013 marks two important anniversaries in the world of Italian opera: the bicentennial of Giuseppe Verdi, and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tito Gobbi, one of the greatest baritones of the 20th century. This exhibit presents a wealth of iconographic materials documenting the art of Tito Gobbi as an interpreter of Verdi's most beloved operas. Gobbi's renditions of Rigoletto, Macbeth, Otello, Don Carlos,Falstaff, and other works come back to life in a fascinating series of photographs, as well as drawings and set and costume designs drawn by Gobbi himself, showing the full complexity of Verdi's characters and the baritone's rigorous and imaginative approach. The exhibit reminds us that a Verdian singer is not only a voice, but also a rounded artist gifted with stage presence, insight, and imagination.
