Roundtable Einaudi "I Coralli" : "What Future for Quality and Independent Publishing?"

Quality and independent publishers play a key-role in proposing a critical approach to social and historical dimensions. An extraordinary study-case is that of the Italian publisher Giulio Einaudi who, since 1933, offered through his publishing house based in Turin an impressive selection of seminal books in a wide range of human sciences to the Italian public. Einaudi also enrolled as editors, and published the books of, some among the most prominent Italian intellectuals such as Cesare Pavese, Italo Calvino and Elio Vittorini. The roundtable will be held in conjunction with an exhibition of original covers that will open at the Italian Institute the same day. The covers are those of the renowned book series "I Coralli", famous for elegant editions of world literature masterpieces. The lecture will focus on issues, challenges and strategies of independent and quality publishing in the U.S. and Italy, outlining trends and perspectives in a publishing world dominated by profit and mass consumption literature.
