La Porta della Legge was commissioned by Wuppertal's Opera House to Salvatore Sciarrino and published by Rai Trade's Edizioni Musicali. It was inspired by a short story by Kafka, which he later included into "The Trial", and which was then given its present cyclic form by the composer. Its subtitle is: "Almost a circular monologue", and circularity is indeed the opera's foremost element, evident as we witness the struggle of a man waiting in vain on law's door. The wait is a lifelong battle. The event evolves in three sequences: at the beginning the man is a baritone, in the second scene he is a counter-tenor, and in the third scene the baritone and the counter-tenor sing together. At this point we have the end of his life's cycle.
The Opera had its world premiere at Wuppertal's Opera House in April 2009 and was then performed in Mannheim the following July. New York's Lincoln Center Festival is presenting the opera's American premiere on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 8.30 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College. The Stage Director is Johannes Weigand and the interpreters are Ekkehard Abele (Baritone), Gerson Sales (Counter-tenor), and Michael Tews (Bass). Hilary Griffiths is conducting the Sinfonieorchester of Wuppertal. The Opera will also run on Wednesday, July 21 and Thursday, July 22, 2010, at 8.30 p.m. The Opera is presented in its original Italian language with English subtitles.
